Handmade pictorial carpet "Tsar's Wedding" | 55 Raj, silk warp | Carpet dimensions 125 × 200

Introduction:

One of the most prominent and intricate Western-style designs in pictorial carpet art. The scene depicts an aristocratic wedding banquet in 17th-century Russia: a hall with a vaulted ceiling and painted walls, latticed windows, hanging chandeliers, and a long table surrounded by dozens of guests. The bride with a white crown and veil is in the center of the frame, a servant holds a food tray overhead, and on the right, a couple embraces — every corner of the frame tells its own small story.

Why this piece is among the top works:

Number of faces. Over thirty characters, each with a different facial expression and angle — from the stern face of the bearded elder to the smile of the child by the table. Executing this volume of portraits in a single piece is the most difficult weaving test.

Variety of fabrics and textures. Brocade garments with intricate patterns, fur on the shoulders, the white table cloth, and the bride's lace veil — each requires a separate color spectrum.

Scene lighting. Candlelight, window light, and the deep shadows of the hall corners are executed simultaneously. Maintaining this lighting balance in the weave requires exceptional skill.

55 Raj and Silk Warp:

In a work with this level of detail, 55 Raj means much finer knots and higher precision than the usual standard — the very feature that allows small faces in the background to be recognizable. The silk warp, in dimensions as large as 125 × 200, guarantees dimensional stability and long-term durability.
